Kelantan to be WiFi state in two years
30 Apr 09 : 4.10PM

KOTA BARU, 30 April 2009: Kelantan will be WiFi-enabled when its government fully implements an internet broadband service within the state in two years.

State Information, ICT Development, Science and Technology Committee chairperson Dr Mohamed Fadzli Hassan said so far, two state government agencies, namely Permodalan Kelantan Berhad (PKB) and Perbadanan Menteri Besar Kelantan (PMBK), were carrying out the project with a private company.

“Thirty-eight locations in the state’s major towns, especially Kota Baru, have been identified by the telecommunication company for the service,” he said.

Fadzli said this after handing over multimedia equipment worth RM15,000 to six schools under the Yayasan Islam Kelantan (Kelantan Islamic Foundation) and to Pertubuhan Kebajikan Islam Malaysia (Perkim), a Muslim welfare organisation.

He added that the state government had so far allocated RM450,000 for information and communication technology, including RM70,000 for the rural ICT programme.

“We expect all the major towns in Kelantan to get to enjoy 24-hour WiFi facility when the programme is fully implemented in two years’ time,” Fadzli said.

He also said the state government had set up a multimedia training centre through Darul Digital, aimed at creating an ICT-savvy society in Kelantan. — Bernama
