Don’t quote websites, says Zam

KUALA LUMPUR: Information Minister Datuk Zainuddin Maidin has told newspapers not to quote websites and give the impression that there is credibility in their stories.

He said most websites on the Internet were provocative and run either by those who were frustrated journalists or frustrated in politics.

“Do not quote them because you are disgracing yourself as you are the authority. Do not give credit to such anarchist websites,” he said after launching the D-Paradise homepage, e-Commerce and free ticket offer programme by D-Paradise here yesterday.

“Sometimes, some newspapers are unable to choose wisely and accept what is written on the web, which is represented by one person or an organisation with political motives.”

He also urged the Government to instil a sense of responsibility among website writers instead of limiting freedom on the Internet.

“If the Government can educate the newspapers to be responsible, it can also do the same to the websites by law or whatever way.

“I’m not asking for them to be banned but there should be some control over the websites,” he said.
